Lace is in the house!

As a girly girl, I am happy to report the new fall trends are lace and more lace.  I can even add that bell sleeves which you will see in stores are trending this season also.  What I love about lace is it is timeless.  It always makes me feel pretty.  The dark jewel tones are so pretty and I feel the fashion designers finally created a fashion trend for women who love being women and showing off our feminine side.

Baby Steps to Distressed Jeans

Destressed Jeans 1

If you look at the picture of me above, I am standing proud in my distressed jeans.  If you are laughing at me, I am laughing at myself too.  I love fashion so much – now more than ever, but distressed jeans will take baby steps for me.  I can tell you that I have looked at them in the store before and thought,  “Why would I buy a jean that looks torn to pieces?” I just can’t justify spending good money on something that has holes in it, but this seems to be the style for Fall.  These jeans are from http://www.WhiteHouseBlackMarket.com.  I purchased them two years ago.  I love these “boyfriend” style jeans because they are so soft and fit like a glove.  The jeans at WHBM always fit me well and wash up nicely.  Two years ago was about the time distressed jeans started appearing in the stores as a fashion trend.

Here’s to you Mom!

There is not a day that goes by I do not think about my Mother.  She died at the young age of 58.  I think about how I am getting closer and closer to this age and understanding more now, she was not old!  She was a fashion icon, and I never knew this growing up.  I never paid attention much to what she wore.  I remember when I started working for a company my Mother had worked at when I first got married.  I would walk through the plant and the older men would walk up to me and tell me how much I looked like my Mother.  They would say, “Your mother was a beautiful woman.  When she walked through the plant, we would stop and watch her, and we do that now with you.” I always thought that was a sweet compliment.  At the time, I never really understood.  Yes, she was pretty, but  I just knew her as my Mom.

Fashion Trends After 50

When you reach the pinnacle of age referring to the top of the mountain age 50 and over, since so many people are living to be 100, should you attempt to keep up with fashion trends?  I think my response would be it depends.  As I love to follow the fashion bloggers on IG, I try to mix it up with blogger ages from the 30 somethings and beyond.  That seems to be the age the fashion designers are marketing to these days.  Sometimes I like the trend and sometimes I think it probably won’t work for my style.  The Kimono cardigan is a new fashion trend I am seeing a lot of on IG.  It appeals to me in the sense that it is like wearing a silk coat which might be nice as we transition into the fall season.  However, when trying mine on today, I felt a little like I was wearing a silk robe over my clothes – kind of like when you are fully dressed and then you decide to do the one last hair spray or perfume thing.  You put on your robe to keep it from spraying all over your clothes.  Oh,  you don’t do this?  Well, I do – sometimes.  HA HA – that must be an old gal trick.

My Love of Comfort in Clothes!

If I am going to wear it, it better feel like a t-shirt.  The older I get the more hypersensitive I become.  I feel like a small child fidgeting around in my clothes trying to get comfortable sometimes and don’t even get me started on wearing a bra!  Yes, I still wear one – but I have started feeling that I must – I mean I have to – be comfortable in my own skin.  The closest thing to my own skin is my clothes.  Not everything I have in my closet is 100% comfortable, and I do have a lot of clothes that are down right not comfortable.  BUT- as they fade away in style or material which ever comes first, I am replacing them with clothes that meet my new demand of stylish yet comfortable!  It has to be pretty, practical, and comfortable.

I am not at a point where I can throw out and start over my entire wardrobe.  I actually still like a lot of my clothes but I do know my desire for comfortable clothes is getting stronger and stronger every time I go shopping which means I am getting more and more picky about what I buy.  I want to look pretty.  I want to look fashionable but I also want to feel comfortable in what I wear.  As I talked in a precious blog about the craze of yoga pants, I forgot to mention as women age we want comfort.  How do we get it?  I think it is all in the fabric the clothes are made from.

Shrug It Off

I have been a female all my life and never wanted to be anything else.  I have always loved everything about being a girl – and now a woman.  I tend to lean more to the conservative style in the more classy than trashy look – HA HA HA – especially now.  I don’t try to look like a 30 or 40 year old because I can’t.  I try to look like ME and looking like me is taking me down several roads of discovery in fashion I seem to be enjoying.  When I go shopping, I am looking at styles of clothes I may not have ever thought about trying on before.  However, I still know my style is conservative yet feminine.  You will never see me in the Hillary Clinton polyester pant suits.  I would rather wear a granny night gown all day!

One of the first classes I took in college was how to dress for success.  Can you believe that was even a college course?  Yes – I was in a business program and it was offered as an elective.  Needless to say, there were no guys in this class – all girls.  The first thing the female instructor said was to always dress for where you want to go in business not where you are now.  That phrase has never left me.  I have always taken pride in making sure I dress professional.  Even in real estate where I see some pretty crazy outfits on my fellow Realtors.  I always dress professional, based on my own definition but to clarify crazy, I mean they might wear shorts and flip flops to sell homes.  Hey, I am not knocking it; whatever works for them, but I would feel weird if I walked up to a new client or any client dressed this way because it is not my style.

Today is closing day.  Closing day is a big deal for me and especially my clients.  I attend every closing as their representative.  Sometimes there are last minute issues.  It is my job to work with the attorney to quickly get them resolved.  I feel the way I dress is a form of representation of them.  I don’t ever want to embarrass my clients.  I know they don’t care what I wear to closing; but if they did, I want them to be proud they have selected me to be their Realtor.  In an area where there are over 7,000 Realtors, it is tough sometimes to compete.  I work hard to do a great job every time and being professional is one of the things I take pride.  Today I picked this black and white outfit I love from White House Black Market.  It is old and one of my favorites.  I keep it in the closet for special occasions.  I am only saying this because I don’t wear the halter top much.  I picked a black skirt (and I have many black skirts) and paired it with a black and white floral halter which I think looks professional and elegant.

As I have gotten older, I struggle with showing my bare shoulders and arms.  Women over 50 tend to build up fat in the worst possible places.  Sometimes I think “How did that get there?  I have never noticed it before.” I am petite in frame so I have to really be careful about my weight (if you read my previous post you know my flaws).  My mother was tall and lean with a big frame.  She was beautiful.  I take after my father’s side of the family who are short and petite – but they are beautiful to me too.  There is one thing I did take after my mother and it is her broad shoulders.  I wish my shoulders were petite and dainty like Susan Lucci but they are not.  Her small frame and tiny shoulders for a woman her age are so pretty to me.  I guess she would be on my list of female crushes.  Now that felt weird saying!  HA HA – but I do think as much as I like her she would enjoy a good southern buttermilk buscuit once and a while – said with love.   I can see she has better control of her diet than I do.

Putting on the halter top and feeling funny about showing my shoulders and arms, I walk back to the closet to consider my options before I pulled the halter off and hang it back on the rack to be admired from a far.  While staring at my What To Wear, I see a lifesaver – a black Shrug.  I remembered purchasing it to wear to an event I felt I might need to take a sweater.  The shrug was perfect to keep me comfortable during my on again off again hot flash mob (not mode because when you start having them you feel like they are coming in mobs).  Look up the definition on Google (my trusty resource for information), it says “a large crowd of people, especially one that is disorderly and intent on causing trouble or violence”. Replace the words Crowd of People and change to Hot Flash for a new definition of “a large hot flash, especially one that is disorderly and intent on causing trouble or violence”. Buying a shrug was a great option for my need a sweater – don’t need a sweater hot flash period of my life.

As I pulled the shrug over my favorite halter top, I realized this might work.  I can walk in to the closing dressed professional and comfortable at the same time and when I leave I can take it off.  Problem solved.  The moral of my story is you can shrug it on or off when you need by owning a little black shrug.  As a side note, I am not a fan of any other shrug color than black.  My own personal opinion is a shrug can also look aging on women in general.  I see a lot of different colors of shrugs and how so many women flock to the latest styles they see on QVC, but I can tell you as an honest woman to stick with a basic black shrug.  The color black always looks polished and elegant.  This is just my opinion and the only expert I am is on ME.  Happy Friday!  Be Blessed.

Have We Gone Yoga Pants Crazy?

yoga pants

I ask the questions seriously because I believe we have all fallen and bumped our head.  Everywhere I go I see women in yoga pants.  I mean if your backside looks good and you just went to an exercise class or took a DIY exercise activity then I totally get it.  I find myself running into the grocery store to pick up a few items after I have walked the Ravenal Bridge or even just walked my neighborhood.  No one wants to take a shower and get dressed just to go run an errand – not even me.  But I am shocked at the amount of women of all ages – especially women my age that I see in public wearing yoga pants.  I understand we have become a society of comfort.  I don’t like to wear binding clothes anymore myself.  Sometimes even jeans can be binding.  I had an old friend who wore dress pants a lot; and when I asked why, she told me they were more comfortable than jeans.  After thinking about it, I realized she was right.  Depending on the style and material jeans can be uncomfortable, but yoga pants as a ready to wear item everyday?  They appear to have become a stable part of our wardrobe some women can’t live without.

I am really not judgmental.  I crossed that bridge and left it behind when I turned 50 – thank God for letting go of that sinful act.  But I must say, there are some things I still question which may come across as judgmental.  Please know that everything and anything I say in any of my blog posts are meant out of love and respect for women – especially women over 50.  As a member of  Team50Plus, (I will call us), I know how hard it is to stay in shape.  I struggle with that myself, and I know how hard it is to find the right clothes to make you feel good about yourself.  The list can go on and on about what we face after we turn 50.  I understand completely.  This is why I am even writing this post because I get it.  What I am trying to tell you is Do Not Give Up On Yourself!  Wearing yoga pants as an essential part of your causal attire everyday or almost everyday is giving up on yourself and being lazy.  That is just my opinion.  Remember I am saying this out of love and respect.  You are better than that woman who gets up saying “What the hell.  No one cares what I wear!” You should care.  Be your best self every day and do not expect anything less from yourself.  Now, I am not combining leggings with yoga pants.  I love a nice black pair of leggings in the Fall and Winter with a cute long shirt and a nice pair of boots or ankle booties or sometimes heels.  There is a difference.  You may say, I don’t care what I wear and believe me it will show.  If you really feel this way, you go be you and wear it proudly, but I can bet deep inside you really don’t feel this way.  No one wants to give up on them self.

As a single female, I am praying for a Christian husband.  I was married for over 25 years and I can truly say, I always got up and got dressed and fixed myself up nice for ME (unless I was sick)  – not for my husband.  He was just the benefactor of a wife who took pride in herself.  I had married friends ask me all the time why do you always dress up even on the weekends because I want to feel good about ME.  I love to wear yoga pants at home too.  So I do make exceptions depending on my day and what I have planned; but if I go out for anything other than exercise, I dress for where I am going and what I will be doing.  I encourage you to look in the mirror every day and ask yourself “How do I want to feel about myself today?” Your choice in clothes will reflect this to the world and to your brain.  If you feel bad, it will show.  If you feel good, it will show.  Our mental attitude triggers everything we do.  It is like getting out of the bed in a bad mood; if we do and we don’t shake it off asap, we will spend the entire day in a bad mood.  As I mentioned in my precious post about What’s in my closet, I made a statement to make every day a fashion show.  I love this idea because it makes me wear the clothes in my closet I spent money to buy.  If I wore yoga pants 75% or more of the time, I would never get any wear out of my clothes.  It also helps me to create the attitude I want to have about myself.

If you read this post and decide I can go take a flying jump : / , please do yourself one favor.  Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and make sure your yoga pants are not too tight and the top you have selected covers your rear end and you wear some cute type of shoe.  Dress appropriately even in yoga pants.  The shoes in this picture are some of my favorites.  I don’t wear a lot of flats but I love these.  You don’t have to buy what I picked out or even anything expensive.  There are so many cute tennis loafers or sneakers you can pick that match your style.  I saw some recently at Target for $30.  Nothing you wear has to be expensive.  I can promise you.  My clothes are from TJMaxx and the total outfit was probably around $25.  I always stick with basic colors for exercise clothes when it comes to the pants.  I want to be able to get a lot of use out of them.  I tend to pick a colorful top to liven myself up.  One last comment and I will leave you alone to yoga on your way, you can fake the public every time you go out with the right accessories.  Be Blessed!
